Although only nearby residents of Gramercy Park own keys to access the private park, anyone in the city can enjoy Gramercy Park's hit Chinese restaurant, The Cottage.
Although the interior is complete with wood floors that are the restaurant a warm feeling, the size of the restaurant makes it more chateau-than cottage-like; the restaurant has high, vaulted ceilings and a party room to accommodate up to one hundred-twenty people.
Seven days a week, the restaurant offers a unique price fixed wine pairing meal. The dinner includes an appetizer, a main course and two glasses of wine chosen specifically for your meal. At $16.95, this could become one of the hottest things in Gramercy (other than the key to the private park!).
Sesame Chicken-- Chunks of crispy chicken in spicy sweet sesame sauce with steamed broccoli & sprinkled with sesame seeds.
Shredded Crispy Beef-- Shredded beef fried until crispy, served in a tangy spicy sauce
Crispy Scallops with Walnuts-- Scallops & Walnuts with a slight touch of sweet & sour sauce
Tangerine Prawns, Shanghai Style-- Prawns sautéed in a sweet tangerine sauce with string beans
Norwegian Salmon Szechuan Style-- Sliced fresh Norwegian salmon, ginger, water chestnuts, snow peas, Szechuan pepper sauce
Hot & Sour Soup
Spring Roll (Vegetables)
Horrible. Don't order from them.

Hot food was hot, cold drink was cold, food was fine. Delivery was delayed, but they were polite when I called about it.

Fast and great prices for the portion sizes. Have always been pleased with the food here.

Dry and suspect sesame chicken was the catalyst for me finally having to say something. I've given this place at least 10 tries, really working through the menu looking for that go-to Chinese but I'm finally giving up. It's so close and I want to love it, but they keep falling flat.

I ordered the pork bun it was disgusting the pork had bones in it. You could trll by the packaging it was bought aT one of those cheap chinatown pastry places on canal. I ordered steamed moo shu chicken the only vege in it was cabbage amd 3 mushrooms . The duck sauce was watered down. There was a small amt of chi chichen sprinkled on top. Total ripoff

I ordered on a Friday night and my food was here in about 15 minutes. The vegetable dumplings are delicious and affordable and the delivery man was so nice, I will definitely order from here again.

Delivery took an hour and 45 minutes - unacceptable for average Chinese.

Ordered an hour and a half ago. Food is still not here. This place sucks.

Delivery took over an hour. Food tasted really really ok. One word to sum it up "underwhelming"
Posted 11 months ago by Matt A.
average to good. I trust the quality much more here than I do at most of the other Chinese options on Seamless.

Lunch special had a lot of vegetables in addition to meat. BBQ Spare Ribs were slightly under-sauced. Soups were good.

Best cheap Chinese delivery in my area - can't beat the Roast duck for the $. Solid fried rice and noodle soups too.

How can they send out stale pork buns, and watery sesame chicken? The only reason I order from them is for the pork buns. For shame guys, if you commit to making a delivery, make sure the food is at least editable.

Abysmal delivery. Estimated time said 15-30 minutes, and the food arrived over an HOUR later and was cold and congealed. The restaurant is located only two and a half blocks away. I called several times, and they were rude and not unhelpful. The food was subpar and I would not recommend ordering from here ever.

Consistently good and on time

So-so. Food arrived within scheduled time. I remember the lemon chicken being much crunchier. This time it hardly had any crust. The shrimp roll was good and shrimps.

Great food, and an incredible price. This is definitely my go-to delivery place.

Always fast delivery- restaurant is so clean inside which is good to know

Food is good, especially for the prices but the small things like inlcuding hot sauce is a consistent failure.

horrible food, horrible attitude

The food is not bad but the delivery service is terrible. The lid wasn't closed properly, and I ordered a Chicken with Eggplant (LOTS OF SAUCE) so it spilled throughout the bag. It completely soaked through the brown paper bag and would have dripped all over had it not been the plastic bag. Honestly, the food is not exceptionally bad, but this type of delivery makes me never want to order from here again.

Delivered late and cold. 1st time ordering and now will be last time!

Definitely have had better. The food was very greasy and there was like 3 pieces of chicken in my chicken and broccoli. What in the devil?

This place is hit or miss. Sometimes the food is great with big portions, but other times it's meh. The dumplings aren't that good... the skin is, but the meat is dry. And the chicken with cashew nuts is mostly water chestnuts. Personally I want the main ingredients in that dish to be chicken and cashew nuts.

I was very disappointed with the food. I've eaten at the restaurant many times, but the past two times I've gotten delivery from The Cottage it's like the food is from some place else. The Chow Fun had almost nothing in it besides some very small shrimp and a few canned mushrooms. I asked for extra sauce on the ribs and got less sauce than a normal order. Given the food here isn't all that cheap, it should be a lot better than run-of-the-mill Chinese delivery. Won't be ordering from here again.

chicken & broccoli best in city! crispy broccoli and perfect sauce! Pork fried rice yummy and fresh. Lo Mein noodle is fatter than I'd prefer or I would have given 5 stars!

Love the food here. HOWEVER, the delivery man is the most rude human on the planet. He has yelled at me multiple times about my tips. Has banged on the door and always says something rude. I tip 20% which I do not think is under tipping. Today he actually ripped the receipt out of my hand to show me the amount again and argued with me to give him more money. I have no idea how this man still has a job with this restaurant.

The Cottage is super speedy (admittedly, I work around the corner from it) and super fine food. It is not going to change your life or introduce you to new culinary horizons (unless your culinary horizons are very limited) but it's good everyday Chinese food and the prices on the lunch special are right.

Sesame Chicken Chef's Special (with different nuts) is exceptional!

15 - 30 minute delivery time is false advertising. I ordered from this restaurant specifically because their delivery time was low, and had to call after 35 minutes to confirm that the food was actually coming.
When the delivery man dropped off my food, he sneered at me and made a rude comment about the fact that he didn't think I had tipped him enough, and walked away from me speaking angrily in another language.
I will not be ordering from The Cottage again.

Let's see...it says "15-30", and they're at Union Square, yet I'm at 21st & 6th, and it's been an hour.
It's just some fried rice and an eggroll for crying out loud! Are you butchering the pineapples for the fried rice, and harvesting the flour for the eggroll wrapper?

Best Chinese Food in NYC! Make sure you order the 10 Ingredient Fried Rice.

its the best "cheaper" chinese in the neighborhood. For some reason I think the food is better on Sunday nights, haha. There have been off nights, but its still better quality and tastier than anything else around (unless you are going for sichuan or something)...

food wasn't very good I wouldn't recommend it at all
Posted 2 years ago by Devika M.
The food it ok, but the two stars are for their cheapness.
I request extra sauce and they never give me enough. Last time I ordered a lomein, soup, egg roll and all I got was one packet of soy sauce.

I haven't eaten here in a long time. Something happened. It used to be good. This time, the chicken was super sweet, the dumplings only okay and the hot and sour soup absolutely tasteless (how can you do that with hot and sour soup?!).
Posted 2 years ago by Kevin D.
Very fast delivery but sent pork dumplings instead of veggie.

I live at least 20 blocks away and order arrived within 20 minutes. Food was warm and very tasty.

Not the snazziest of restaurants, but for delivery is perfectly adequate. It won't be the best chinese food you've ever had, but as a neighborhood staple chinese restaurant, this one is perfect. I don't like the White Meat Only option, though. I would prefer white meat, but the pieces are like very very thin chicken tenders and not the battered pieces of chicken in the non-white meat only dish.

Good, inexpensive food that isn't too greasy like some of the other Asian fusion places.

only good thing is that the food shows up in 10 minutes, other than that the soups are watered down and you can just taste the MSG in the food

I found the food very greasy.

This is my favorite chinese food in the union square area. They offer the best lunch-time specials. Their menu features an array of classic Chinese dishes and Thai food. Their beef chow-fun is incredible.
Posted 3 years ago by Michael S.
Really bad quality food - especially the chicken they use for their various dishes - sesame chicken, chicken and broccoli and chicken cashew nuts were all horrible.
Posted 3 years ago by John G.
great (crispy) sesame chicken, not too expensive, fast delivery

Food is kind of bland. Dumplings in hot chili oil were not hot at all, tasted like they were floating in plain peanut butter. Ribs were dry.

Average food and terrible customer service when they messed up my order...I ordered chicken dish and it came without chicken and when I asked them to bring me the meal I ordered I would have to come and pick it up if I wanted it any time soon. Then the delivery guy came 30 min later (not even that terrible) but he just brought a box with plain chicken and not the dish I ordered

HORRIBLE!!!! worst chinese food i've ever had in nyc. We ordered 5 dishes and EVERYTHING was disgusting - we had to throw away and order from another place.
Posted 5 years ago by lauren h.
I knew this place had a poor reputation but i hadn't eaten there in years, so i thought i would try. The duck dish had about three strips of duck meat and about ten strips of duck fat. Honestly this is bad chinese food for any part of the USA, let alone NYC. Really shocked at how bad this is.
Posted 5 years ago by Andrew B.
Frankly terrible. They forgot my drinks, the dumplings were dry, the wonton soup (which is such a stable of chinese restaurants I can't believe anyone can possibly get it wrong) was really bland.
Posted 6 years ago by Christopher D.
Food is good, delivery is SUPER FAST (at least for me, I live practically across the street). Hot and Sour soup is very good, General's Chicken is good but not great.
Posted 6 years ago by naman d.
The food is always good from The Cottage but I am sick to death of them forgetting to send the soda with the food. I order the soda to drink with my meal and not for it to turn up after I've finished eating. Not a difficult concept right? I wouldn't mind if this was the first time but they've managed it three times in a row now. Incredibly annoying!!!
Posted 6 years ago by Dan S.
If i can give this zero star i would. I've lived around the corner for over a year and never ordered from here, tonight i decided to give it a try. I was RIGHT, their food totally sucked. The stir fried veggie dish was sour (if not from unfresh food, it's from vinegar which I have no idea why one would use vinegar on a veggie dish). The beef stew noodle was tasteless. The dumplings had thick skin and minimal filling. It is probably the worst chinese food I had in the city.
